Acid reflux?
My baby had the following symptoms since birth (now he is 7 mo) but doctors in our country don’t say anything about reflux or its possible treatment, all they say is that babies have horizontally positioned stomach and the opening muscle is weak and they have these symptoms and they will grow out of it. But I see my baby suffer a lot, so I want to know whether his symptoms show that he has reflux. If he does I want to give him Zantac.
He: sometimes spits up after eating,
fusses and when held upright burps a lot
hiccups a lot, usually starts after a burp
arches his back when being fed
refuses to sleep, arching his back, wakes up a lot during the night
he refused to eat from 2 mo till he was 5mo (I forced during that period)
now eats only 3.5-5 oz per time (25 oz per day), little appetite
he is little underweight
Please, help me to determine whether he has reflux. I repeat, I went to lots of doctors they don’t know about reflux.
Thank you all for replying, I don’t know how to rate though
My son is formula fed, I switched many different and this Korean one is the one he likes and eats. I took him to pediatricians, they would only say something about child’s stomach characteristics. What is reflux anyway? What exactly will I see if I take him to upper GI? Also, what is the exact name of Efamil AR and Gentle ease, I looked it up and there were soo many different Efamils.
Thank you!

My son had reflux he is 9 months old and did outgrow it. I would try elevating his bed by putting books or something under on side of legs. Also we tried several different meds and the only one that worked for us was Prevacid. Also if you are using formula, you may want to thicken it with a little rice cereal or use Enfamil AR, this is formulated for babies with Acid Reflux. Hope this helps.

If he doesn’t have Acid Reflux disease, he may be allergic to the formula you’re feeding him. (Unless he is breast fed, because babies tolerate that better than anything!) Some babies seem to have those symptoms if they don’t tolerate the formula. My first born was like that and I switched him to Similac Soy. My daughter was the same way, but because she was premature (35 1/2 weeks and a twin…) she couldn’t even tolerate the Soy and had to be put on Similac Alimentum (hypoallergenic for intolerances in cow milk and soy) I do believe that most babies will grow out of the Acid Reflux “stage.” I’d say its your formula.

is he bottle fed or breast fed? There is a formula out by enfamil and I swear it helped me it is called Gentle Ease it worked great for my little one I gave it to her from 3 mos til she was 7 mos and then went back to Enfamil with Lipil. Also if you are using the generic formula like walmart brand called Parents choice that may be the problem, hope this helped.

It does sound like reflux, but you will have to go to a doc, as Zantac is by prescription only. My son, in addition to all symptoms you described, was also throwing up a lot (not just spitting up). Go to a different doctor first, though. Our pediatrician is great, and he knew everything about Acid Reflux. The doctors you took him to - were they pediatricians, or just family doctors/general practitioners? Ask around for a good pediatrician.
Hiccups usually don’t have anything to do with reflux, it’s just a baby thing.
If you’re breastfeeding, avoid citrusy things, tomato based foods (pasta sause, ketchup), chocolate, fried, fatty and spicy foods, pickles, and see if it makes any difference.

i’m no doc, but i just took my kid, 7, to the doc for this very same thing. she did not report and flexing of the back, but mostly stomach aches after eating. so if he’s spitting up after eating, it’s possible. doc game me prescription for pepcid, but said mylanta is also good.
stay away from fried foods, not really your case and acidic foods and juice. caffine is a no, chocolate is a no. anything that produces acid. maybe try organic juice and natural fruit juice. soy milk or 2%..nothing that would give baby too much gas. broccoli is a no for some.
take baby to doc just in case. hope he gets better. oh doc said smaller meals, more often if necessary, may help so the tummy doesn’t have to digest food as often creating more acid.

my son has acid reflex he is 8 months old(had it since birth), see if your doc can do an upper GI on your son to know for sure if it is acid reflex or if the formula just doesn’t agree with him and may need to be switched to another.but what i do with my son is burp him after about 4 oz of formula,or right after he eats his food.try not to give him as much food at one time, try to give him half of what his eating now and then wait about 10 minutes and try to feed him some more.try to keep him sitting upright for as long as you could, that might help.

My son was born with Acid Reflux and he had a lot of the same things going on with him. I tried everything the doctors told me to but nothing really worked. Then one day on a nurse told me to try this different formula Enfamil A.R. Lipil its for baby’s who spit up frequently. It’s the only thing that helped my son. He is now almost 8mos and he’s doing just fine. Good you luck.

For my son I used the Enfamil A.R. Lipil which worked very good for him.
