When you suffer from chronic heartburn, whether it’s caused by gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) or some other digestive disorder, it’s important to know how to treat the heartburn. The treatment can range from lifestyle change to surgery in severe cases that don’t respond to any other treatment.
There are many medications that are used to treat heartburn / Acid Reflux. There are also various over-the-counter treatment options available for Acid Reflux. And for many chronic Acid Reflux sufferers, they want an alternate, natural way of treating their Acid Reflux.
-Antacids work by neutralizing acid in the stomach. Antacids neutralize acid on contact to provide heartburn relief.
*Rolaids is used to relieve the symptoms of acid indigestion, heartburn, gas, and sour stomach.
*Maalox is an antacid containing aluminium hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide. These help neutralize or reduce stomach acid (antacid). Some formulas also contain Simethicone, which helps treat the gassy, bloated feeling (antigas).
*Mylanta acts as an antacid and is most commonly used in the treatment of heartburn, gastritis, hiatal hernias and peptic ulcer. It is also used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
*Tums is used as an antacid to relieve heartburn, acid indigestion, and stomach upset.
-Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are a group of prescription medications that prevent the release of acid in the stomach and intestines. Doctors prescribe PPIs to treat people with heartburn (Acid Reflux), ulcers of the stomach or intestine, or excess stomach acid (Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome).
*Nexium is prescribed to treat peptic ulcers, GERD, erosive esophagitis, and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.
*Prevacid is prescribed to treat and prevent peptic ulcers, erosive esophagitis GERD, and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome. *Prilosec is prescribed to treat peptic ulcers, GERD, and erosive esophagitis.
*Protonix is prescribed to treat damage to the erosive esophagitis and Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.
*Aciphex is prescribed to treat peptic and esophageal ulcers, GERD, and erosive esophagitis.
-H2 Blockers..This type of drug works by decreasing the amount of acid the stomach produces, and is used to treat conditions in which the stomach produces too much acid and conditions in which acid comes up into the esophagus and causes heartburn, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease, or (also known as Acid Reflux disease).
*Axid is in a class of medications called H2 blockers. It decreases the amount of acid made in the stomach.
*Pepcid is in a class of medications called H2 blockers. It decreases the amount of acid made in the stomach. *Tagamet is in a class of medications called H2 blockers. It decreases the amount of acid made in the stomach.
*Zantac is in a class of medications called H2 blockers. It decreases the amount of acid made in the stomach.
just always learn to know about precautions and side effects..
Halitosis maybe cause by poor dental hygiene, mouth conditions, nasal conditions, certain lung diseases, infection of respiratory system, certain metabolic or hormonal disease, stomach disorders, certain drugs and throat conditions such as REFLUX..

gerd or gastro esophageal reflux disease, is a very common phenomenon but symptoms are usually rare.
treatment of gerd is multipronged & depends upon the severity & individual tolerance.
treatment involves 2 basic things
1. reduction of gastric acidity
2. prevention of reflux. i.e. prevention oof gastric juices from refluxing back into esophagus.
to reduce acidity. u can have either medication or lifestyle modification or both.
lifestyle modifications are, prevention of fatty, spicy foods, reduced intake of tea, coffee & non veg food, esp in the evenings & nights. healthy exercises & yoga may also help.
stress has also been shown to increase acid production.
medication which can be used are
antacids like digene, mucaine gel, ulgel etc. they only help to neutralise acid, but dont supress acid production.
carbonated salts like eno are of not much help, they can increase reflux
h2 blocker like ranitidine have a limited role.
ppi’s like pantopazole, rabeprazole, may help as they completely stop the acid production, & help in reducing gastric acidity significantly.
prevention of reflux is helped by lifestlyle modification, as mentioned earlier. morever, decrease in gastric acidity reduces the chances of reflux, so if ur acidity is controlled, reflux is automatically controlled.
in case it still persists, u can try gastrokinetic agents like itopride, available by the name f ganaton in indian markets.
regarding ur next question. yes it may cause halitosis but this condition is also contributed to by no. of local factors, & all halitosis is not due to reflux.

THERE ARE MANY REMEDIES AVAILABLE TO REDUCE AND EVEN GET RID OF GERD. WHENEVER, YOU HAVE A HEARTBURN TAKE TWO TO THREE TABLE SPOON OF PURE HONEY. THE HONEY WILL WORK FAR BETTER THAN MANY ANTACIDS.
TRY TO CONCENTRATE ON YOUR EATING PATTERN. THAT MEANS, TIMINGS OF YOUR MEALS. DO NOT SKIP MEALS AND THEN HOG AT ONE TIME. EAT SMALLER MEALS ALL THE TIME. IF YOU ARE FEELING VERY HUNGRY AND WANT TO EAT EIGHT CHAPATIS THEN EAT SIX.
IF YOU SMOKE OR DRINK ALCOHOL THEN STOP THEM IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT EAT TOO MUCH FAT AND FRIED THINGS.
DRINK FIVE TO SIX NORMAL SIZE GLASSES OF WATER IN THE MORNING, THIS WILL HELP TO REGULATE YOUR MOTION. THE CONSTIPATION IS ALSO MAIN CAUSE OF HEART BURN AND GERD.
MOST BUT NOT THE LEAST, GETTING RID OF GERD MAKE THIS AS YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTION BECAUSE IT IS EASY TO WORK ON A PROBLEM IF YOU ARE TOTALLY FOCUSED ON IT AND ACT ON IT EVERYDAY.
REMEMBER, CONSTANT GERD OR HEARTBURN CAN LEAD TO OESOPHAGEAL CANCER IN LONG TERM.
BUT CHEER UP, IF I CAN GET RID OF MY GERD THEN YOU CAN ALSO DO IT TOO. THE ONLY THING YOU HAVE TO REMEMBER IS TO FIRST FIND OUT THE CAUSE OF YOUR GERD.
MY OTHER SUGGESTION IS TO GET YOUR ENDOSCOPY DONE IF IT IS A ONGOING PROBLEM FOR SOMETIME.
IF YOU WANT A COMPLETE REPORT ON GERD THEN EMAIL ME AT VIBASHARMA@HOTMAIL.COM

I had a horrible case of GERD a year or so ago and it was on the weekend. I basically stopped most of my food except for oatmeal. I ate it 3 times a day. It did the trick. I don’t know why or how, but it let my gi system rest and seemed to neutralize the acids.
You should probably get to an MD and find out whether you are suffereing from GERD (usually you will need an endoscopy) or whether you have simple heartburn.
Avoid spicy and acidic foods. Stop all your eating 3 hours prior to bedtime. Reflux often happens as you lie down in your bed. Get plenty of exercise. Do not wear tight fitting clothes. If you DO have the problem at night, get a pillow wedge to prop you up alittle in your bed.
The bad breath can absolutely be from reflux or heartbearn. If you have acid or food coming back into your throat, it can cause an irritation and bring on bad breath.
I have a severe case of GERD caused by
a Hiatial Hernia. I had been seen by GI Specialists and had all the tests. Most of the time I can control the symptoms by what I eat and how much I eat. I know if I have a large large meal and it is greasy or spicy—I will experience reflux. I avoid eating large meals particularly at night.
Keep your stress level down as that also has a bearing.
I have medication, but I only use it when the symptoms get really bad.
